Goethes Werke: IV. Abteilung 1. Band

This volume belongs to the monumental Weimarer Ausgabe, also known as the Sophien-Ausgabe, which was commissioned by Grand Duchess Sophie of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach in the late 19th century. Intended to be the definitive scholarly edition of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's complete works, the collection was meticulously organized into four distinct sections: literary works, scientific writings, diaries, and correspondence. The fourth section, to which this specific volume belongs, is dedicated exclusively to the author's extensive collection of letters, offering an intimate look at his intellectual exchanges and personal evolution.

The editorial direction for this ambitious project was overseen by a team of prominent scholars who aimed to provide a comprehensive, critical text based on original manuscripts. The design reflects the austere, academic standards of the era, emphasizing readability and archival permanence. Over the decades, this edition has been received by the literary community as the cornerstone of Goethe scholarship, setting the standard for how the author's vast body of work is organized, categorized, and interpreted by researchers and historians globally.
