Goethes sämmtliche Werke: vollständige Ausgabe in 15 Bänden

This 15-volume collection of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s complete works represents a significant effort to consolidate the literary legacy of Germany’s most influential polymath. Published during the mid-19th century, these editions were intended to provide a comprehensive, standardized reading of Goethe's poetry, prose, drama, and scientific writings for the burgeoning educated middle class. The goal of such compilations was to canonize Goethe as the central pillar of German national identity and literary culture.

The editorial and design philosophy behind these sets prioritized accessibility and readability, often utilizing clear, legible typefaces typical of the era’s German publishing houses. By grouping his works into a uniform set, publishers ensured that personal libraries could showcase a complete record of his intellectual development, from his Sturm und Drang period to his mature classical work. These volumes were widely received as standard domestic references, cementing Goethe’s status as a foundational figure in Western literature.
