This fifteen-volume collection of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's complete works was issued in the mid-19th century, a period during which German publishers sought to solidify Goethe’s status as a foundational pillar of national literature. Produced to provide a comprehensive and accessible library for the burgeoning middle-class readership, the edition reflects the meticulous editorial standards of the era, focusing on textual accuracy and systematic organization of his diverse output, ranging from lyrical poetry to major dramatic works like Faust.

The physical design of this collection emphasizes the aesthetic of the 19th-century bourgeois library, featuring cloth or leather bindings intended to endure as household heirlooms.
