Goethes sämmtliche Werke: vollständige Ausgabe in fünfzehn Bänden

This fifteen-volume collection of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's complete works represents a significant effort in the 19th-century German publishing landscape to consolidate the literary output of the Weimar polymath. These editions were typically produced in the mid-to-late 1800s by prominent houses such as Cotta, the original publisher of Goethe, or later competitors seeking to bring his extensive body of poetry, drama, and prose to a burgeoning middle-class readership that viewed his library as a staple of cultural education.

The design of these multi-volume sets often prioritized readability and academic utility, featuring dense, serif typography and cloth or leather bindings intended for library display. While the internal layouts varied by printer, they generally maintained a traditional, restrained aesthetic reflective of 19th-century bookmaking sensibilities. These collections were received as definitive authoritative references, widely disseminated across European and North American academic institutions to ensure that the depth of Goethe's contributions to the Enlightenment and Romanticism remained accessible to future scholars.
