Goethes Werke: Auswahl in zwölf Bänden : Mit vierzig Stahlstichen

This twelve-volume edition of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's selected works was published during the mid-19th century, a period marked by a fervent German cultural effort to solidify Goethe’s status as a national literary icon. These sets were designed for the burgeoning middle-class home library, intended as both a practical reading collection and a display of intellectual status. By packaging his vast output into a uniform series, publishers aimed to make his multifaceted contributions—spanning poetry, drama, and prose—more accessible to the educated public of the Biedermeier era.

The distinctive feature of this edition is the inclusion of forty steel engravings, a popular illustration technique of the time that allowed for high-detail, durable prints. The design reflects the aesthetic values of 19th-century book production, prioritizing ornate frontispieces and crisp typography to elevate the literary content. While many publishers issued similar collections during this time, these sets are generally regarded as a testament to the era's reverence for classicism, reflecting a systematic attempt to organize and preserve the German Enlightenment legacy through meticulous curation and high-quality artisanal printing.
