Goethes Werke: Autobiographische Schriften

This volume belongs to the seminal Weimar Ausgabe, or Sophien-Ausgabe, of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's collected works. Commissioned by Grand Duchess Sophie of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach in 1885, the project was intended to be the definitive scholarly edition of the author's extensive literary and scientific output. It served as a monumental cultural undertaking, gathering manuscripts, letters, and journals to create a standard text that would anchor Goethe's legacy within the intellectual history of Germany.

The editorial design and organization were helmed by leading philologists of the late 19th century, aiming for a rigorous, systematic classification of Goethe's life and thought. The autobiographical section, which includes classics like Dichtung und Wahrheit, was carefully curated to balance narrative cohesion with historical accuracy. Upon its release, the edition was lauded by the academic community for its unprecedented thoroughness and remains a foundational resource for scholars studying the Weimar classicism period.
