Where it came from
Orlando furioso is a seminal epic poem first published in 1516 by Ludovico Ariosto, representing the pinnacle of the Italian Renaissance literary tradition. It serves as a continuation of Matteo Maria Boiardo's Orlando innamorato, blending chivalric romance with satirical commentary on contemporary courtly life. The work was composed during Ariosto's service to the Este family in Ferrara, intended to entertain the ducal court while showcasing the author's sophisticated command of narrative structure and humanist wit.
The poem is celebrated for its intricate interweaving of multiple plot lines, focusing on the madness of the knight Orlando due to unrequited love. Its influence on Western literature is profound, having inspired countless adaptations, artistic interpretations, and musical compositions over the centuries. Modern editions, such as those cataloged in academic collections, often feature historical commentary and scholarly apparatus to preserve the complex linguistic nuances and allegorical depths that Ariosto intentionally wove into his masterpiece.
