Sämtliche Werke: Jubiläums-Ausgabe in 40 Bänden

The Jubiläums-Ausgabe, or Jubilee Edition, of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's complete works was published in 1902 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the author's birth. Orchestrated by the Cotta publishing house, the collection served as a definitive scholarly endeavor to organize Goethe's expansive literary and scientific contributions into a uniform, high-quality set for the public. It remains a hallmark of German publishing history, reflecting the deep cultural reverence for Goethe at the turn of the century.

The design of the 40-volume set emphasized academic rigor paired with aesthetic restraint, characteristic of the German book arts movement during the Wilhelmine era. Edited by Eduard von der Hellen, the edition was intended to provide a reliable text base for scholars and enthusiasts alike, steering away from the embellishments of earlier, more romanticized prints. It was received as a landmark reference work that solidified the canonization of Goethe’s life work, and it set a standard for literary collected editions that influenced subsequent academic publications for decades.
