Where it came from
Ludwig Herrig compiled this expansive anthology in the mid-19th century to serve as a comprehensive educational resource for German-speaking students of the English language. Published during a period of significant cultural exchange, the volume was intended to provide a systematic overview of the development of English and American literature, reflecting a structured pedagogical approach common in the nineteenth-century European academic tradition.
The design of the work focuses on utility, combining biographical sketches with chronologically arranged selections of poetry and prose. Herrig aimed to curate a representative cross-section of national literature that would be accessible yet rigorous. The work achieved considerable success as a standard textbook in secondary schools and gymnasiums across Germany, where it remained a staple of language instruction for many decades.
