Where it came from
Published in the mid-19th century in Braunschweig, this anthology was compiled by the German philologist Ludwig Herrig to serve as a comprehensive educational resource for students of the English language. During this period, the study of English literature was gaining significant academic traction in Germany, and Herrig intended this volume to provide a structured survey of both British and American literary traditions, pairing selected prose and poetry with biographical context to bridge cultural and linguistic gaps.
The volume is a representative example of the didactic publishing style of the era, prioritizing clarity and breadth for the learner over critical commentary. Ludwig Herrig designed the work to act as a complete, self-contained overview of national literatures, utilizing his expertise in pedagogy to categorize texts for effective instruction. The book was well-received within European academic circles as a reliable primer, remaining a standard reference tool for English language studies throughout Germany for several decades.
