Where it came from
Compiled by Ludwig Herrig and first published in the mid-19th century in Brunswick, Germany, this anthology was designed as a comprehensive textbook for students of English language and literature on the European continent. Its creation reflects the growing academic interest in English studies in German-speaking regions during the Victorian era, aiming to provide a curated survey of both British and American literary traditions in a single, accessible volume.
The work is structured to offer a broad historical outline of literature alongside biographical sketches of prominent authors, followed by selected poetry and prose excerpts. Herrig’s pedagogical approach was well-regarded for its time, successfully bridging the gap between rigorous linguistic study and an appreciation for the cultural output of the English-speaking world. The book was a staple in many 19th-century classrooms and academic libraries, serving as a foundational reference for students engaging with canonical texts.
