Where it came from
Ultramega, released by Image Comics in 2021, emerged as a creative milestone for artist and writer James Harren. Known previously for his dynamic work on titles like Rumble and B.P.R.D., Harren authored this series to explore a surreal, high-stakes reimagining of the kaiju genre, blending brutal physical action with grotesque, mythic scale. The second issue serves as a critical expansion of the series' central premise, where human hosts are transformed into champions tasked with defending humanity against monstrous incursions.
The design and aesthetic of the series reflect Harren's distinctively kinetic visual style, characterized by dense linework, exaggerated anatomy, and an intense, vibrant color palette often complemented by Dave Stewart. Upon its debut, the series was received with considerable acclaim for its visceral storytelling and singular artistic vision, marking it as a significant departure from standard superhero tropes and a testament to Harren's ability to drive a narrative through purely visual momentum.
