Ultramega by James Harren Vol. 1

Ultramega Volume 1, released in 2022, serves as a collection of the initial chapters of the Image Comics series created by James Harren. The project emerged from Harren’s desire to craft a modern, visceral take on the Japanese kaiju and tokusatsu genres, heavily influenced by series like Ultraman. Harren, previously known for his dynamic work as an illustrator on titles like B.P.R.D. and Rumble, serves as both writer and artist, employing an kinetic, hyper-detailed style that emphasizes massive scale and grotesque monster designs.

The narrative follows a world defended by the Ultramega—superpowered beings tasked with protecting humanity from giant monsters—but explores the heavy psychological and physical tolls such a life exacts. Upon its debut, the series garnered significant critical attention for its relentless pacing and Harren’s mastery of action choreography. It is frequently cited as a standout example of contemporary creator-owned action comics, praised for merging traditional superhero tropes with a darker, more abrasive aesthetic that pushes the boundaries of its genre roots.
