Where it came from
The Edward Newgate character card, identified as OP02-004, was released as part of the Paramount War expansion for the One Piece Card Game in late 2022. This set draws its narrative inspiration from the Marineford Arc, a pivotal moment in the manga and anime where the Whitebeard Pirates attempt to rescue Portgas D. Ace from execution. The card represents Edward Newgate, better known as Whitebeard, at the height of his power during this conflict.
The alternate art version of this card features a striking illustrative style that emphasizes the character's imposing stature and veteran status. Designed to function as a powerful red leader card, its aesthetic choices were intended to convey the weight of his legacy and the intensity of the war, moving away from standard card frames to offer collectors a more dynamic, full-bleed visual representation of the captain in the heat of battle.
