Where it came from
Released in early 2023 as part of the Paramount War expansion for the One Piece Card Game, this Edward Newgate leader card depicts the legendary pirate captain, also known as Whitebeard. The set draws direct inspiration from the Marineford arc of the series, a pivotal moment in the manga and anime where Newgate leads his crew into an all-out war to save his adopted son, Portgas D. Ace.
The alternate art version features a stylized, painterly aesthetic that emphasizes Newgate's imposing physical presence and his status as one of the Four Emperors. Illustrated to convey a sense of gravitas and weathered strength, the design shifts away from traditional card art toward a more dramatic, character-focused composition that resonated with players and fans of the series alike for its faithful capture of the character's legacy.
