Where it came from
The Kawamatsu character card (OP06-103) was released as part of the Wings of the Captain set for the One Piece Card Game, debuting in 2024. This specific card represents a character from the Wano Country arc, capturing the Kappa samurai in the distinct, high-energy illustrative style characteristic of the game's broader artistic direction, which aims to blend the original manga aesthetic with dynamic, foil-enhanced card layouts.
The design process for the Wings of the Captain series prioritized expanding the presence of secondary characters from the Wano arc to provide players with more strategic depth in deck building. As a character card, Kawamatsu was designed to reflect his lore-heavy role as a Nine Red Scabbard, focusing on board control and defensive synergy. Upon release, the card was well-received by the competitive community for its utility in yellow-color decks and its faithful depiction of the character’s design by Eiichiro Oda.
