Where it came from
Kawamatsu was released in 2022 as part of the Romance Dawn set (OP01), the inaugural expansion for the One Piece Card Game. This set introduced the game to the global market, drawing heavily from the Wano Country arc of the manga and anime. The card serves as a character unit, representing the loyal samurai and member of the Nine Red Scabbards, whose narrative arc focuses on themes of sacrifice and enduring hope during the oppression of Wano.
The card’s artwork reflects the stylized, high-contrast aesthetic consistent with the series' modern digital illustration standards. Designed to integrate into the game's defensive mechanics, the card portrays Kawamatsu in his signature kappa-inspired armor. Upon its release, the card was widely received by players as a staple for green-aligned decks due to its utility in manipulating card advantages, firmly establishing it as a foundational piece in the early meta of the trading card game.
