Where it came from
The Shanks card (OP01-120) from the Romance Dawn set serves as the inaugural Secret Rare for the One Piece Card Game, released by Bandai in 2022. It was designed to celebrate the franchise's 25th anniversary, drawing inspiration from the character's pivotal role as the mentor figure who inspires the protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy, to embark on his journey. As a Parallel variant, this card features distinct foiling techniques and alternate art that emphasizes its status as a chase card within the game's first expansion set.
The artwork for this specific Parallel version is noted for its clean, dynamic aesthetic, capturing Shanks in his signature stoic posture. The design process focused on translating Eiichiro Oda’s long-standing character aesthetic into a trading card format that would resonate with both long-time fans of the manga and competitive card gamers. Upon its release, the card received significant attention for its high-rarity status, quickly becoming a centerpiece for collectors looking to secure key pieces from the game’s initial launch.
