Where it came from
Altaria 84/124 was released as part of the Dragons Exalted expansion in August 2012. This set marked a significant milestone in the Pokémon Trading Card Game by introducing the Dragon type as a distinct category, represented by the deep gold color palette of the card frames. The inclusion of Altaria was intended to showcase this new mechanic, with the card featuring a unique ability called 'Dragonsite' that provided support for other Dragon-type Pokémon, reflecting its role as a supportive, serene presence in the series.
The artwork for this card was illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita, one of the most prolific and recognized artists in the franchise’s history. Arita utilized a ethereal, painterly style to capture Altaria’s cloud-like wings and graceful appearance. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its tactical utility in competitive play, while collectors valued the holofoil treatment that accentuated the mystical atmosphere of the illustration, solidifying its status as a staple of the Black & White era.
