Where it came from
The Charizard ex card, numbered 125/197, was released in the 2023 Obsidian Flames expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This set is notable for introducing the Tera Pokémon ex mechanic, which features Pokémon with a different elemental type than usual. In this specific iteration, Charizard shifts from its traditional Fire-type to a Darkness-type, a creative choice intended to offer players new strategic possibilities in the competitive landscape while providing a fresh aesthetic twist on one of the franchise's most iconic characters.
The design of this card follows the modern holographic style prevalent in the Scarlet & Violet era, utilizing clean borders and a dynamic, crystalline artistic treatment that highlights the Tera phenomenon. As a Double Rare card, it was distributed broadly across booster packs and specialized product boxes, making it an accessible cornerstone for collectors and players alike. Upon its release, it was well-received by the community for its striking artwork and its utility in decks that leverage Darkness-type energy acceleration.
