Where it came from
The Charizard ex card, numbered 223/197, was released in the 2023 Obsidian Flames expansion of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This set is notable for introducing the Tera Pokémon ex mechanic, which features Pokémon with different elemental types than their traditional iterations. This specific card reimagines Charizard as a Darkness-type, a design choice intended to reflect the shifting, crystalline aesthetic of the Terastal phenomenon first introduced in the Scarlet and Violet video games.
The card features an intricate Special Illustration Rare design created by artist AKIRA EGAWA. Known for a dynamic, painterly style that emphasizes texture and dramatic lighting, Egawa’s illustration depicts the Pokémon in a state of intense focus amidst a swirling, dark atmospheric backdrop. Upon release, the card was highly sought after by collectors for its departure from traditional color schemes and its detailed, full-art presentation, solidifying its place as a centerpiece of the Scarlet and Violet series.
