Where it came from
Released in the 2023 Obsidian Flames expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game, the Charizard ex (215/197) represents a notable mechanical shift for the character. In this set, Pokémon ex cards were introduced with shifting Tera types, allowing the franchise to play with type advantages outside of traditional evolutionary lines. This specific card reimagines Charizard as a Darkness-type creature, moving away from its standard Fire-type designation to reflect the crystalline aesthetic of the Terastal phenomenon.
The card features an illustration by artwork collective AKIRA EGAWA, who are recognized for their dynamic and high-contrast digital renderings. The design centers on a crystallized version of Charizard, utilizing deep purples and jagged, gem-like textures to emphasize the unique Tera form. It was received as a flagship chase card for the set, serving as a primary focal point for collectors interested in both the competitive viability of the Tera mechanic and the striking, unconventional visual direction of the Obsidian Flames release.
