Where it came from
The Mew ex card, cataloged as number 053 within the Scarlet & Violet Black Star Promos set, was released as part of the Pokémon Trading Card Game's transition into the ninth generation of core games. This specific card was distributed as a promotional inclusion within the Mew ex Collection, a specialty product released in late 2023 that centered on the iconic Mythical Pokémon. Its release served to highlight the 'ex' mechanic introduced in the Scarlet & Violet era, which emphasizes powerful, high-HP Pokémon with unique abilities and attack patterns.
The design of this iteration of Mew ex reflects a modern aesthetic shift in the trading card game, utilizing vibrant, clean digital illustrations that emphasize the creature's fluidity and psychic energy. As a promo card, it was crafted to provide players and collectors with an accessible way to obtain a competitive-level card featuring a fan-favorite character. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the community for its illustrative quality and its utility in the game's evolving competitive meta, where its 'Restart' ability allowed players to consistently refresh their hand.
