Where it came from
The Torchic card, numbered 6/40, was released as part of the Nintendo Black Star Promos series in 2003. It was distributed in North America primarily through the Pokémon Organized Play program and included as a promotional incentive to coincide with the release of the third generation of Pokémon games, Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire. This card served to introduce the new Fire-type starter to the trading card game audience as the franchise transitioned to the Advanced Generation era.
The card features artwork by Naoyo Kimura, who was a frequent contributor to the Pokémon Trading Card Game during this period. The design reflects the clean, bright aesthetic prevalent in the early 2000s, utilizing a holographic foil treatment that distinguishes it from standard expansion releases. Upon its introduction, it was well-received by players and collectors alike for its accessibility and its role in marking the shift toward the updated game mechanics introduced by the Game Boy Advance titles.
