Where it came from
The Mew card numbered 40/40 was released in 2002 as the final entry in the Nintendo Black Star Promo set. It was distributed in North America as an insert within the DVD release of the film Pokémon 4Ever. This distribution method was a strategic effort by The Pokémon Company to bridge the gap between their cinematic releases and the trading card game, encouraging fans to collect unique promotional cards that were not available in standard booster packs.
The card features artwork by Hironobu Yoshida, who brought a signature minimalist and clean aesthetic to many cards during this era of the game. Designed to celebrate the legendary status of the character, the card utilizes the Psychic type and a holographic finish to distinguish it from common set cards. It is regarded by collectors as a significant piece of early 2000s Pokémon history, marking the conclusion of the long-running Black Star Promo series before the transition to the EX era.
