Bluebeard's Castle = Herzog Blaubarts Burg = Le Château De Barbe-Bleue

This 1985 London Enterprise reissue captures a landmark 1965 recording of Béla Bartók's one-act opera, originally composed in 1911. The work emerged from the height of Hungarian symbolism, with a libretto by Béla Balázs that reimagines the traditional Bluebeard folktale as a psychological exploration of isolation and the complexities of human relationships. This particular release served to reintroduce a definitive interpretation to a new generation of listeners, maintaining the artistic integrity of the original sessions.

The recording features the formidable pairing of Christa Ludwig and Walter Berry under the baton of István Kertész, whose approach to the London Symphony Orchestra is widely celebrated for its structural precision and emotional intensity. By pairing the expansive orchestration with the nuanced vocal performances of Ludwig and Berry, the production successfully emphasizes the haunting, modernist tonal palette Bartók intended. Critics have long cited this version as a benchmark performance, praised for its clarity of texture and the seamless integration of dramatic tension into the orchestral narrative.
