Where it came from
Released by the East German state-owned record label ETERNA in 1960, this recording of Tchaikovsky’s most iconic ballet excerpts highlights the Staatskapelle Berlin under the baton of Horst Stein. The record was produced during a period when ETERNA sought to document the high level of orchestral performance available within the German Democratic Republic, serving both as a domestic cultural touchstone and a mechanism for state-sanctioned musical dissemination.
The sleeve design reflects the minimalist and functionalist aesthetic common to ETERNA releases of the era, which prioritized clear typography and recognizable classical motifs over the elaborate artwork seen in Western market pressings. Horst Stein, who served as a conductor at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden before his career took him to major international houses, approached the score with a traditional, disciplined precision that was well-received for its clarity and balance.
