Where it came from
Released in 1991 under the Carmen label, this recording captures the distinctive collaborative spirit of Jiří Šlitr and Jiří Suchý, the legendary duo behind the Semafor theatre in Prague. The record emerged in the immediate aftermath of the Velvet Revolution, a period of renewed cultural freedom in Czechoslovakia that allowed for the re-release and celebration of works that had shaped the nation's cabaret and jazz-influenced pop identity during the previous decades.
The production serves as a testament to the enduring influence of Šlitr’s whimsical compositions and Suchý’s lyrical wit, which defined the intellectual and artistic landscape of 1960s Prague. By gathering performances associated with the Malý Orchestr Carmen Party, the release was designed as an archival tribute to the duo’s stage chemistry, aiming to preserve the lighthearted yet sophisticated musical legacy that remained a cornerstone of Czech popular culture long after Šlitr’s passing.
