Carmen-Suite

Commissioned by the Bolshoi Theatre in 1967, the Carmen Suite was composed by Rodion Shchedrin as a transcription of Georges Bizet's famous opera for string orchestra and percussion. Shchedrin intended to create a reimagining specifically for his wife, the legendary ballerina Maya Plisetskaya, aiming to distill the essence of the opera into a vibrant, rhythmically complex work that highlighted the virtuosity of the string section.

The recording released by Melodiya, featuring the Moscow Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Gennady Rozhdestvensky, stands as a defining interpretation of this work. Upon its release, the suite was met with initial controversy from Soviet cultural traditionalists who resisted the unconventional, percussion-heavy arrangement of the beloved classic, though it eventually gained international acclaim for its bold, modernistic synthesis of nineteenth-century romanticism and mid-twentieth-century avant-garde sensibilities.
