Where it came from
The Carmen Suite was composed in 1967 by Rodion Shchedrin as a transcription of Georges Bizet's opera Carmen. Commissioned for his wife, the legendary ballerina Maya Plisetskaya, the work was designed to highlight her expressive range within the Bolshoi Ballet. Shchedrin opted to re-score the opera for strings and a vast array of percussion, stripping away the traditional vocal elements to emphasize a modern, rhythmic energy that departed from standard symphonic treatments of the score.
Released on the Melodiya label, catalog number С 01659-60, this recording captures the distinctive Soviet-era approach to orchestral production. The arrangement faced initial skepticism from conservative musical authorities in the Soviet Union who viewed the radical adaptation of a classic work with suspicion. However, the suite eventually achieved international acclaim as a bold, virtuosic piece of performance art, remaining one of the most frequently performed and recorded pieces of modern Russian concert repertoire.
