Carmen-Suite

The Carmen Suite was originally conceived in 1967 when composer Rodion Shchedrin arranged themes from Georges Bizet's opera Carmen for his wife, the legendary ballerina Maya Plisetskaya. Shchedrin intended to strip away the original operatic libretto, focusing instead on the dramatic narrative power of the music by re-orchestrating the score for a string ensemble and a massive percussion section. This bold reimagining provided a percussive, athletic soundscape perfectly suited for contemporary dance, and it quickly became one of the most performed and recorded Russian compositions of the 20th century.

This specific 1985 recording features the Moscow Virtuosi under the direction of violinist and conductor Vladimir Spivakov. By this time, the ensemble had established itself as one of the Soviet Union's premier chamber orchestras, known for their precise, transparent, and highly nuanced performances. Their interpretation for the Eurodisc label reflects a sophisticated approach to Shchedrin’s complex textures, balancing the work's raw, rhythmic energy with the technical refinement that defined the Virtuosi’s international reputation during the mid-eighties.
