Where it came from
Released in 1985 on the French independent label Stil, Chant Grégorien captures the collaborative efforts of vocalists Dominique Vellard and Emmanuel Bonnardot. The album was produced during a period of renewed academic and artistic interest in medieval liturgical music, aiming to strip away the heavy, resonant production styles often associated with secular classical recordings of the era in favor of a more austere, authentic acoustic environment.
The recording is characteristic of the rigorous musicological approach championed by the Ensemble Gilles Binchois, with which both Vellard and Bonnardot were deeply involved. By focusing on the purity of the monophonic line, the performers sought to replicate the meditative, communal atmosphere of monastic tradition. Upon its release, it was regarded by critics as a precise and respectful interpretation, valued for its clarity and the technical expertise brought to the ancient repertoire.
