Chant Grégorien

Released in 1957 on the IPG label, this recording of Gregorian chant by the Monks of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes represents a landmark in the preservation of liturgical music. The Benedictine monks of Solesmes have long been recognized for their rigorous scholarship in reconstructing the authentic performance style of early plainchant, a tradition they solidified through the publication of the Liber Usualis. This recording emerged during a period when the monastic life was becoming more accessible to the public, offering listeners a window into the meditative, monophonic vocal traditions that date back to the early medieval period.

The recording is celebrated for its purity and rhythmic nuance, which the monks achieved by emphasizing the fluid, speech-like cadence of the Latin text rather than a rigid, metered structure. Dom Joseph Gajard, the choirmaster at the time, is widely credited with guiding the choir toward this definitive interpretive style. The record served as a primary reference for scholars and clergy alike, playing a crucial role in maintaining the historical integrity of Catholic chant at a time when traditional liturgical practices were beginning to face widespread liturgical reform.
