Chant Grégorien Au Monastère Bénédictin Santo Domingo de Silos

This recording was originally produced in 1973 by Archiv Produktion, the early music label of Deutsche Grammophon. It captures the authentic performance of Gregorian chant by the Benedictine monks of the Abbey of Santo Domingo de Silos in Spain, under the musical direction of Ismael Fernández de la Cuesta. The project was intended to document the living tradition of the monastic liturgy, emphasizing the acoustic clarity and meditative vocal style maintained within the Romanesque cloister of the abbey.

The recording gained international cultural prominence in the mid-1990s, when a massive resurgence in interest transformed these specific chants into a global phenomenon. While initially marketed to a niche audience of liturgical and historical music scholars, the release was celebrated for its purity and lack of instrumental ornamentation. It remains a hallmark of 20th-century musicology, credited with bringing ancient monophonic vocal traditions to a mainstream secular audience.
