Where it came from
Released in 1973 by the French label Art & Musique, this recording captures the liturgical chants performed by the Benedictine monks of the Abbey of Fontgombault. The Abbey, located in the Indre department of France, is renowned for its commitment to the traditional Solesmes method of Gregorian chant. During the 1970s, recordings of this nature served as both a spiritual outreach for the monastic community and an archival effort to preserve the ancient musical tradition of the Roman Rite in its authentic, meditative form.
The aesthetic of the album is defined by its austere, scholarly presentation, typical of monastic recordings from this era. The production aims to recreate the immersive, reverberant acoustics of the Abbey’s architecture, prioritizing the clarity of the unaccompanied vocal lines. These records were generally produced for a niche audience of liturgical scholars, practitioners, and those interested in Western art music history, and they remain valued for their historical consistency and adherence to strict monastic performance standards.
