Chant Grégorien - Chants De La Primitive Eglise

This recording emerged from the long-standing efforts of the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes to preserve and standardize the performance of Gregorian chant. Under the direction of Dom Joseph Gajard, the choir sought to translate their rigorous musicological research—which focused on returning to the earliest manuscript traditions—into a medium that could reach a global audience. Released by Decca in 1960, the album represents a mid-century commitment to capturing the liturgical soundscapes of the primitive Church with academic precision and spiritual gravity.

The design and production were driven by a desire to convey the austere, monophonic beauty of the monastic tradition, stripped of post-medieval embellishments. The release was part of an influential series of recordings that became the definitive benchmark for Gregorian chant in the 20th century. Critically, these records were lauded for their purity and rhythmic nuance, serving not only as devotional aids for the faithful but as essential reference material for musicologists interested in the development of Western vocal polyphony.
