Chant Grégorien - Kyriale - Prières Litaniques Anciennes

The Chant Grégorien - Kyriale - Prières Litaniques Anciennes, released in 1972 on the IPG label, represents a significant entry in the extensive discography of the Chœur des Moines de l'Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Solesmes. The Benedictine abbey in Solesmes, France, has long been considered the epicenter of the restoration of Gregorian chant, with their choir acting as the definitive voice for the rhythmic and melodic principles established by Dom André Mocquereau. This particular recording, directed by Dom Joseph Gajard, captures the solemn, meditative quality that the Solesmes monks pioneered through their lifelong dedication to studying medieval liturgical manuscripts.

The design and production of this record were guided by a desire to preserve the authentic monophonic tradition of the Roman Catholic Church following the Second Vatican Council. Dom Joseph Gajard, who served as choirmaster for several decades, was highly regarded for his insistence on a fluid, natural rhythm that mirrored the Latin text rather than a rigid, metronomic beat. This release was received by liturgical scholars and audiophiles alike as a standard-setting example of historical performance practice, emphasizing the ethereal, communal nature of chant intended for liturgical prayer rather than secular entertainment.
