Chant Grégorien - Kyriale / Prières Litaniques Anciennes

The Chœur des Moines de l'Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Solesmes has long been considered the authoritative voice in the interpretation of Gregorian chant. Recorded under the direction of Dom Joseph Gajard, this 1972 release on the Decca label captures the monastic tradition of the Solesmes school, which famously restored the rhythmic and melodic nuances of early medieval plainchant. By the time this recording was released, the choir had already achieved international renown for its commitment to the rhythmic theories established by Dom André Mocquereau, which sought to bring a fluid, natural cadence to the liturgical music of the Roman Catholic Church.

This specific recording was produced as part of Decca's ongoing effort to archive high-fidelity liturgical music, reflecting a mid-century cultural interest in authentic early music traditions. Dom Joseph Gajard served as the choirmaster at Solesmes for several decades, and his influence was instrumental in establishing the precise, ethereal style that became the benchmark for monastic vocal ensembles. The production emphasizes a meditative and austere soundscape, deliberately captured to mirror the acoustic environment of the abbey, ensuring that the listener experiences the music in a manner consistent with its original liturgical purpose.
