Where it came from
Released by Decca in 1973, this recording features the Chœur des Moines de l'Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Solesmes under the direction of Dom Joseph Gajard. The monks of Solesmes are widely recognized as the definitive authorities on Gregorian chant, having spent decades restoring the musical tradition to its medieval roots through meticulous paleographic research and historical performance practice.
Dom Joseph Gajard served as the choir master at Solesmes for several decades, overseeing a significant catalog of recordings that served to preserve the rhythmic and melodic nuances of the chant. This particular pressing captures the solemnity of the Palm Sunday liturgy, reflecting the abbey's commitment to maintaining liturgical integrity during a period when the Roman Catholic Church was undergoing significant post-Vatican II liturgical changes.
