Chant Grégorien - Le Dimanche Des Rameaux

Recorded in the mid-20th century, this pressing captures the liturgical chants of the monks of the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes. The abbey holds a historic role as the center of the movement to restore Gregorian chant, a project spearheaded by Dom Prosper Guéranger in the 19th century and refined by his successors. These recordings were intended to preserve the authentic rhythmic and melodic interpretation of the chant, emphasizing a prayerful, fluid delivery that avoids the rigid meter often imposed by modern musical standards.

Dom Joseph Gajard, who directed the choir during this period, was instrumental in shaping the rhythmic theories that define the 'Solesmes method.' His work sought to return to the neumatic notation of medieval manuscripts, aiming to recapture the spiritual nuance of the monastic tradition. Upon their release on the Festival Classique label, these recordings were widely acclaimed by musicologists and religious scholars alike, serving as the definitive reference point for the study and performance of plainchant throughout the 20th century.
