Where it came from
This recording was produced in 1972 by IPG as part of a long-standing initiative to document the liturgical chant of the monks of Solesmes Abbey. The Abbey has been a central authority in the study and performance of Gregorian chant since the 19th century, famously spearheading the restoration of authentic chant melodies that had become obscured over centuries of liturgical evolution.
Directed by Dom Jean Claire, the choir of the Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Solesmes recorded these masses to preserve the specific rhythmic and tonal interpretations developed by the monastic community. The release reflects the scholarly approach of the Solesmes school, which prioritized a fluid, prayerful execution of the melodies, an approach that profoundly influenced how Gregorian chant was understood and taught in the post-Vatican II era.
