Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1985 on the Erato label, this recording of the Good Friday liturgy features the Chœur Grégorien de Paris under the direction of François Polgár. The album was produced during a period of renewed interest in authentic performance practices for medieval liturgical music, aiming to capture the stark, meditative atmosphere of the Catholic Tenebrae services and the solemnity of the Passion according to Saint John.

The album reflects Erato’s commitment to high-fidelity documentation of sacred vocal traditions. François Polgár, a prominent figure in French choral music, emphasized a clean, scholarly approach to Gregorian chant, prioritizing clarity of vocal line and liturgical accuracy. The release served both as a devotional tool and an academic reference, intended to provide listeners with a precise realization of centuries-old chant traditions that define the liturgical character of Holy Week.
