Where it came from
This 1972 recording captures the liturgical tradition of the Benedictine monks of the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes, a monastery in France world-renowned for its dedication to the preservation and authentic performance of Gregorian chant. Released on the Decca label, this record serves as an extension of the Abbey’s long-standing partnership with the record industry, which began in the early 20th century to document the rhythm and modality of their unique musical heritage.
The musical direction for this session was overseen by Dom Jean Claire, who succeeded the influential Dom Joseph Gajard as choirmaster. Dom Claire was a rigorous scholar of musicology who sought to refine the Solesmes interpretation of the neum notation found in ancient manuscripts. His work was critically received for its academic precision and meditative atmosphere, helping to solidify the Abbey’s recordings as the definitive reference point for scholars and listeners interested in the evolution of Western ecclesiastical music.
