Where it came from
Released in 1985 on the Elyon label, this recording captures a performance of Gregorian chants within the acoustic environment of the Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde in Marseille. The album represents a mid-1980s interest in liturgical music, focusing on the atmospheric resonance of the cathedral, a landmark known for its prominent position overlooking the city and the Mediterranean Sea.
The recording features Les Baladins de la Chanson alongside L'ensemble Vocal Vincent d'Indy, a collaboration that sought to preserve traditional monastic vocal styles. The design and production aimed to document the specific tonal quality of the sanctuary, reflecting a period when small, independent labels often focused on regional cultural or religious recordings to capture the intersection of architecture and sacred vocal performance.
