Chants Grégoriens Pour Le Temps De Noël

Released in 1974 by Harmonia Mundi France, this recording features the Capella Antiqua München under the direction of musicologist Konrad Ruhland. The album emerged during a period of renewed academic and popular interest in medieval liturgical music, specifically the monophonic tradition of Gregorian chant. Ruhland, known for his rigorous approach to historical performance practice, sought to strip away the accretions of later eras to present these sacred chants in a style that felt authentic to the medieval monastic experience.

The recording is celebrated for its austere and atmospheric interpretation of the Christmas liturgy. By focusing on the pure vocal lines and the specific resonant qualities of the ensemble, the release helped solidify Harmonia Mundi’s reputation as a premier label for early music. Critics and scholars often point to this record as a definitive example of mid-twentieth-century scholarship in the field, highlighting the ensemble's precision and the natural, unadorned acoustic aesthetic that became a hallmark of the label's production style.
