Where it came from
Released by the Art & Musique label, this recording features the Chœur des Moines de l'Abbaye de Fontgombault, a Benedictine monastery in France known for its commitment to traditional liturgical music. The recording captures the monks performing Gregorian chants, a form of monophonic, unaccompanied sacred song that has been central to the Roman Catholic liturgy for centuries.
The production reflects a broader effort within the late 20th-century religious music scene to preserve and disseminate the authentic, meditative sounds of monastic life. By stripping away instrumental accompaniment, the recording highlights the intricate vocal lines and the acoustics of the abbey, aiming to foster an atmosphere of prayer and reflection for listeners far beyond the monastery walls.
