Where it came from
Cinema was originally recorded by Holger Czukay, the pioneering bassist and co-founder of the krautrock band Can, during the late 1970s. The album emerged from a period of intense experimentation in his home studio at Weilerswist, where Czukay honed his signature style of 'editing' tape recordings into complex, multi-layered soundscapes. Long considered a lost or unreleased project, it represented a bridge between his work with Can and his later, more abstract solo explorations.
This 2018 reissue by Grönland Records arrived as part of a concerted effort to preserve and document Czukay's sprawling solo discography. The production aimed to honor his unconventional approach to sound collage, emphasizing his mastery of tape manipulation and his ability to blend ethnic instrumentation with avant-garde electronic textures. Upon its long-awaited release, critics praised the work for providing critical context to his influential career, noting that the album remains a quintessential example of his genre-defying creative process.
