Plight & Premonition / Flux & Mutability

Originally released in 1988 and 1989 respectively, Plight & Premonition and Flux & Mutability were born from a collaborative residency between David Sylvian and Can co-founder Holger Czukay at Inner Space Studio. These sessions marked a significant departure for Sylvian from his pop sensibilities, embracing Czukay’s innovative use of sampling and tape manipulation to create expansive, ambient soundscapes. The music is defined by a sense of atmospheric uncertainty, blending organic instrumentation with avant-garde studio techniques.

The 2018 reissue by Grönland Records was meticulously curated to introduce these experimental works to a contemporary audience, restoring the delicate textures of the original recordings. The design aesthetic remains minimalist and contemplative, reflecting the ethereal nature of the compositions. Upon their initial release, the albums were highly regarded by critics for their meditative depth, cementing a reputation for both artists as pioneers in the crossover between art-rock and sound art.
