Le Chant Grégorien En L'Abbaye Sainte-Anne De Kergonan

Released by the French label Arion in the early 1970s, this recording captures the liturgical life of the Benedictine monks at the Abbaye Sainte-Anne de Kergonan in Brittany. The abbey, established in the late 19th century, is well regarded for its commitment to the traditional Solesmes method of chant, a rhythmic style of Gregorian plainsong that emphasizes the natural flow of Latin text. This record was produced during a period when the label sought to preserve authentic monastic repertoires for a growing international audience interested in meditative and historical liturgical music.

The recording is notable for its acoustic setting, as the monks chose to record within the resonant architecture of their abbey church to capture the natural reverberation essential to the chant's atmospheric quality. By avoiding artificial studio effects, the producers aimed to provide a faithful document of the monastic experience. Upon its release, the album was received as an authoritative reference for those studying medieval monophony and served to introduce the specific stylistic nuances of the Kergonan school to listeners beyond the cloister walls.
