Where it came from
Lamido, released in 1974 on the Parisian label Sonafric, serves as a vital document of the cross-cultural exchange between West African musicians and the thriving African music scene in France during the 1970s. Sonafric was instrumental in capturing and distributing high-life, soukous, and traditional rhythms to a global audience, providing a platform for artists from Cameroon and across the continent to formalize their sound in professional studio settings.
The album is a quintessential example of the era's regional experimentalism, blending traditional Cameroonian percussive structures with the arrangements popularized by the African diaspora in Europe. Its design and sound reflect the label's commitment to authentic documentation, capturing the raw energy of live ensembles within the polish of early seventies recording technology. While the specific personnel behind Nord Cameroun Rythms remain largely anonymous in the broader discography, the record is highly regarded by ethnomusicologists and vinyl collectors for its historical preservation of regional folk traditions.
